Do you know the many ways you can use an RSS feed to drive traffic to your site? Having a feed is a good way for your readers to keep on top of your posting. But you can also spread your blog’s RSS feed around the Web so that it’s bringing you traffic any time you make a change or a post to your site.

As a writer, your blog topics should be on the topics you write about. using RSS feeds means that each time you publish a new post, your feed will broadcast that around the Web, alerting smart editors and publishers – and readers! – that your blog is a hotbed of content. Plus, you start looking more authoritative too!

Getting your blog contents broadcast everywhere is accomplished when you post your RSS feed, or your posts are subscribed to by other sites and blogs too. For example, you can add your feed to any other blogs or websites you also currently own. Have your site posts show up in the sidebar of your blog, and visitors to your other sites will find your site too.

You can ask your online friends to do the same with their blogs or sites, by adding your RSS feed to their pages as well. Most blog platforms offer a widget or plugin to allow an RSS feed to display in the blog layout.

Start building additional sites and blogs on your favorite topics, and have your RSS display on those too. Related topics are perfect for driving additional traffic to your site.

Use online feed aggregators to list your RSS feed with directories of feeds. Some good ones are FeedAgg, for example, you simply add your feed’s URL to their database. Some others are FriendFeed, and xFruits. Send your RSS fed out there far and wide, and you’ll see more traffic coming into your site.

Getting traffic to your website is key to making successful sites, successful web pages, successful blogs – and it’s not that difficult if you know some key tips for how to get traffic.

It really is about taking the time to build quality content, then getting links to your site, and publicizing your site around the Web in a variety of ways.

You might ask: what is the best way to get traffic to your site? The best way is to get targeted traffic – visitors who are looking for exactly what you are writing about. Often, this is the reason that social bookmarking is not the most highly desirable method of getting traffic. It’s been shown that social site traffic is mostly “surfers” who are interested but may or may not be the precise audience you are writing for. If you’re monetizing your site or your blog, social traffic is the least likely to earn you income, for that reason.

How can you get targeted traffic from the Web? You need to get good rankings in Google, Yahoo or MSN search engines for your topic, attracting people who are searching for the info you provide.

One of the best ways to do that is to use article marketing. You write multiple articles describing information from your site, then post those around the Web, so that the search engines pick them up and point visitors to your main site or site. Each article contains links to your site, giving you multiple backlinks and quality content that leads visitors to your page.

Article writing and posting, especially if you’re trying to post to many different article directories, can be tiring. A few different services are available now to help make the task easier.

Using article marketing helps in a number of ways: You get keyword anchored backlinks to yoru site, which help your rankings in the search engines; you get more authority for having top content posted in a variety of places on the Web; and the articles themselves start giving you additional impact by getting listed in the search engines as well as pointing to your site. These are just a few of the ways article marketing can help grow traffic to your site.

It also beats advertising, which can be extremely costly, and where testing alone can blow through your budget. You can buy links from a variety of services, but this is also expensive, and can hurt you in the long run. You also don’t want to try using “black hat” methods, which can get you banned from Google for good.

Using article marketing to promote your site is still 100% legit with all search engines, keeps working for you even while you sleep, and is really inexpensive. It can also help your site get indexed quickly, which means traffic finds your page right away.

If you can write quality sites, you can write good articles to post online, and drive traffic to your site – quality, relevant traffic, that can help build your presence online.

If you’re online as a writer for any length of time, you’ll quickly hear about the six-figure bloggers that are blogging for money, and how they’ll sell you their courses-books-workshops etc. etc. etc. so you can do it too. I’l be honest, I started out this blog that way.

I know how tempting it can be, if you want to earn cash from your work, to try to follow in their footsteps. But will those models work after all that expense, and is there a simpler, more basic way to make money blogging?

There’s a school of thought out there that says giving away a lot of in-depth free content, focusing on social bookmarking to get your name out there everywhere, spend a ton of time twittering, digg-ing, buzz-ing, whatever, and with all the people that come to your site, you’re bound to build your email list, and make a ton of money – eventually.

There’s another school of thought that says, why not use that same content but build a blog or site targeting only traffic looking to buy NOW, not social visitors, and have a site that appeals to the side of human nature that wants immediate action when they arrive? Like clicking on ads? This would be the approach if you want to make money blogging, in a shorter period of time.

There are some very big SEO people out there right now, who have said they now realize that when it comes to making money, every day, they are wasting their time on Twitter et al. It’s fun, for sure, but leave it for cable news shows.

Instead, there is a way that’s much easier than doing product launches, building huge lists of possibly-interested vistors from social sites (of people who don’t buy anything) and spending months or even years slogging away, thinking that’s how long it takes before you start to see any online income.

If you’re a freelance writer, you may or may not have a blog which is a money-making vehicle versus a personal journal. First, you want to start a blog that has making extra money as its sole purpose. It can be on any topic you love to write on.

But you should slant your topic to those looking to for something they need right away, who want to take action fast. And you don’t need to try to “sell” them either, with sales letters, long-form copy, and so on. Because the strategy is, they usually they don’t read past the first screen, before clicking around a bit.

You’re going to design your site not so much to be read, but to give information, and offer relevant ads. The ads can be AdSense, or other affiliate ads, and you’ll want to learn how to increase website traffic to get the right people to see your site/blog. But your page will focus mainly on the keyword terms the visitor is using to find your site. And those keywords will target things they need and want right now. Not amorphous terms like “blogging” or “kids” but “kids halloween costumes” or “printable games for kids”.

As a writer, you may find freelance writing jobs where you write articles for others who are publishing websites or otherwise building commercial sites. The approach I’m talking about is to do some of that for yourself; choose a topic, write a ton of content, and publish it on a site or sites, or blog or blogs, to make the same money yourself. Don’t just sell your writing once, when it can build a whole network you can profit from yourself.

If you have your own consulting gig or other freelance writing business going, then you may already be on your way to six figures freelance writing. But if not, you might visit Make Money With Adsense to learn, for free, that there are other ways to make money online with your writing. Blogging for money isn’t as hard as you might think, with the right system in place.

I sent a post to the SixFigureWriting mailing list a couple weeks ago, offering to give a web site review for selected readers who might be interested. My review consists of offering ideas for (1) making the site more traffic-friendly, and (2) features to add to attract long-term visitors and add-on business.

Out of several dozen submissions, I chose three that I think show how different writers approach using the web, and each site is in a slightly different phase of development, from fairly basic to significant content.

For each site, I’ll be suggesting changes, and the site owners will select three to implement and track. I’ll be posting all the details and progress here on SixFigureWriting, including videos and screen capture so you can follow right along with my analysis. I’d be itnerested to hear reader’s comments too, things you’d have suggested instead, or questions that you think of when you see what I recommend.

Stay tuned!
